How do VAT / EU rules affect what’s imported (VAT ID, tax lines, invoices)?

Written by Juanita J

Question: How can we make sure VAT info is included immediately when Amazon orders import into Shopify?

Answer: ToolE can automatically import the buyer’s VAT/Tax ID (EU-only) and save it into the Shopify order details. VAT amounts/tax lines depend on what Amazon returns (or whether your Shopify-tax fallback is enabled).

Quick checks (EU VAT ID import)

You’re not in the EU region

  • Automatic buyer VAT/Tax ID import is EU-only.

  • What to do: If you’re outside the EU, this specific VAT ID sync won’t be available.

“Get buyer tax ID” is not enabled

  • What to do: In ToolE go to Marketplace Settings → Order Settings → enable “Get buyer tax ID”.

VAT ID is expected but not visible

  • ToolE saves it into the Shopify order details (exact field can vary by implementation/workflow).

  • What to do: Open the Shopify order and check the order details/notes/additional info area your team uses for customer tax info. If you use an invoicing app, confirm where that app reads VAT IDs from.

Quick checks (VAT amounts / tax lines)

Amazon didn’t provide tax amounts

  • If Amazon sends tax as zero/missing, Shopify may show 0 tax lines after import.

  • What to do: Verify Amazon is returning VAT/tax amounts, or use your store’s Shopify-tax fallback approach (if available) to create a tax breakdown.

Invoice needs (practical guidance)

  • Need the buyer VAT number on invoices? Enable Get buyer tax ID (EU-only).

  • Need a VAT breakdown (net + tax) in Shopify? Ensure Amazon tax amounts are returned or use your fallback breakdown workflow.
