Why are taxes different between Shopify and Amazon?

Written by Juanita J

Question: Amazon shows VAT/tax, but the imported Shopify order shows 0% tax (or different tax). Why?

Answer: The most common reason is Amazon did not return tax amounts in the order data at import time, so ToolE imports what Amazon provides, and Shopify ends up showing 0 tax lines (or a different breakdown).

Quick checks (tax differences)

Amazon tax amounts are coming through as zero

  • Example pattern: Amazon returns ItemTax = 0.00 and ShippingTax = 0.00 via SP-API.

  • What it means: ToolE can’t create tax lines from amounts Amazon didn’t provide.

  • What to do: Check Amazon’s tax configuration/reporting (e.g., ensure Amazon is calculating/reporting VAT where expected).

You’re mixing up “VAT ID” vs “VAT amount”

  • VAT ID (buyer tax number) is a customer identifier.

  • VAT amount is the money value used for tax lines and accounting.

  • What to do: If you need the VAT number on the order/invoice, enable Get buyer tax ID (EU-only). If you need tax amounts in Shopify, confirm Amazon is returning tax amounts, or use your Shopify tax fallback workflow if enabled.

Using a Shopify tax fallback (if enabled in your store)

  • Some stores choose to derive a tax breakdown from Shopify tax settings when Amazon doesn’t provide tax amounts.

  • What it does: Creates a correct net/tax breakdown without changing the order total (gross stays gross).

  • What to do: Confirm whether your store has this fallback enabled and that Shopify permissions/settings are approved as required.
