What identifiers can I use to link (SKU / Barcode / Metafield / ASIN) and which should I choose?

Written by Juanita J

ToolE links Shopify variants to Amazon listings using a matching identifier. You can choose from:

SKU (recommended)

Use this if: your Shopify SKU = Amazon Seller Central SKU.

Why choose it: it’s the simplest and fastest way to link and keep inventory syncing.

Barcode

Use this if: your SKUs don’t match, but your Shopify Barcode matches the identifier used on Amazon (often the SKU value you want to match to).

Why choose it: quick alternative when you already maintain barcodes on Shopify.

Metafields

Use this if: SKUs/barcodes don’t align and you need a custom identifier stored in Shopify.

Why choose it: flexible—lets you enter the Amazon SKU into a product or variant metafield for linking.

Note: Metafield linking may require fetching the entire Shopify catalog to relink.

ASIN (plan-based)

Use this if: you want to link by Amazon ASIN (commonly for established Amazon listings).

Availability: this option is exclusive to Pro and Enterprise plans.

Which should I choose?

  1. Choose SKU if your SKUs match on both platforms.

  2. If SKUs don’t match, use Barcode (if you already have accurate barcodes).

  3. If you need full flexibility, use Metafields.

  4. Use ASIN only if you’re on Pro/Enterprise and linking by ASIN fits your workflow.
